The term Chromatography derives from the Greek words “chroma”, which means “color”, and “graphein”, which means “to write”. The combination of these two terms was directly inherited from the invention of the chromatography techinique , first used to separete pigments. Through the chemical reaction of specific ingredients, it is possible to ‘scan’ the soil with a technique similar to developing an analogue photographic film. Using this method, it is possible to understand the quality and characteristics of a certain soil.
In this specific application, the soil fertility around the Rhine River (Karlsruhe, Germany) has been analyzed and presented to the biodesign department of the University of Karlsruhe in Germany.
